About My Practice

There is an old saying that in the course of every human life, one encounters 10,000 joys and 10,000 sorrows. Whether we consider ourselves young, old, rich, poor, famous or not, we all are equal in our fundamental experiences: no matter who we are, we experience birth and death, love and heartbreak, joy and despair. I see my role as a therapist as helping my fellow humans deal with the inevitable losses that come with living, be it loss of an identity, loss of self-worth, loss of a loved one, loss of a relationship, loss of joy. Even just the thought of future loss can be painful, leading to persistent anxiety and worry. I also believe strongly in everyone’s ability to heal and grow from loss, and to use loss as a springboard for more fully living our lives. I take great joy in facilitating this process in those who see me for therapy.

I offer my clients not just empathy but also practical tools, information and strategies that you can take with you when therapy has run its course. Similar to how we must exercise to stay physically fit, through our work together you will learn easy exercises that, when practiced regularly, will help you stay mentally fit. Importantly, these exercises aren’t just designed to reduce pain - they also can add more positive feelings to your day-to-day experience, leading to greater enjoyment, and even enchantment with life!

Every person approaches therapy at their own speed, and so I meet each client with compassion for where they are starting from in dealing with their own personal challenges. In the spirit of transparency, therapy with me does require ongoing commitment to complete self-help activities, in between our meetings together, that will help you improve your ability to stay mentally healthy on your own. These activities include evaluating your mood on a regular basis, completing “homework” assignments, and providing me with regular feedback on how therapy is going so that we can make sure our work together is maximally effective. Also, I tend to take a lot of notes during therapy so that I can make sure I’m fully attentive to your unique situation and am truly helping you make progress.

My counseling style has been described as “reflective” and “warm.” I strive to help my clients understand their own wisdom and strength through asking the right questions and listening deeply. For those who are curious about my background and qualifications, I’ve been counseling since 2009 and applying the TEAM-CBT approach since 2017. W. Glasser, D.D. Burns, and V. Satir had the biggest influences on my thinking and style of therapy. When I’m not practicing, I enjoy spending time with my spouse and two children, playing vinyl records, attending the occasional live music event, cooking, sipping tea, orcharding, and gardening with native plants.
